yearning for a return to childhood when faced with catastrophe and ultimately, the wonder of imagination and its ability to heal.

The Altered Voice
Intricate, symbolic and mythical, these pieces are the beginning of an ongoing narrative exploring the intersection of illness, identity and representation.
Drawing from sources both historical and medical, l have taken inspiration from religious manuscripts from the 14th and 15th century, Celtic symbolism, blood films, hematology formulas and illustrations from early medical texts.
The delicate application of paint layered and over painted, results in a rich and absorbing environment, a beautiful web of pattern and form that defies the subject matter, illness is a disorder of structure a corruption from within.
The idea that our physical demise is somehow alluring challenges the association of horror and fear yet at the molecular level it can be agonizingly beautiful. How we visualize the invisible, become lost in the experience and transition, these are the questions that permeate the paintings.
